If you’ve never hired a process server before, the range of prices you’ll find online can be confusing. Quotes from $95 to $400+ for what appears to be the same service. What explains the difference, and what should you actually expect to pay in Alberta in 2026?
Want a number instead of a range? Use the free process server cost calculator to build a flat-rate estimate for your exact serve — Calgary, Edmonton, or anywhere in Alberta — in under a minute.
What Affects the Cost
Urban vs. Rural Urban serves — Calgary and Edmonton — have the lowest base rates because the server can efficiently complete multiple serves in a day. Rural serves require dedicated travel time. A serve in Drumheller, Lethbridge, or a remote acreage outside Airdrie costs more because the server is driving exclusively for your job. Most Alberta process servers charge mileage at approximately $1.10/km for any travel outside city limits.
Standard vs. Rush Standard service typically means the serve is attempted within a few business days, with 2–3 attempts made at different times. Rush service — same-day or next-day delivery — carries a premium, typically $75–$125 on top of the base rate.
Number of Defendants If your claim names multiple defendants at the same address, each additional defendant requires a separate Affidavit of Service. Most firms charge an add-on fee per defendant.
Complexity of the Serve A straightforward residential serve at a known address is the simplest (and cheapest) scenario. Corporate serves, serves at gated communities, or serves requiring skip-tracing to find a current address add complexity and cost.
Typical Alberta Rates in 2026
| Service Type | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Standard Calgary / Edmonton (base) | $150 – $225 |
| Rush Calgary / Edmonton (add-on) | +$75 – $125 |
| Rural Alberta (base + mileage) | $185 – $350+ |
| Additional defendant (same address) | $40 – $60 |
| Commissioner of Oaths | $50 – $100 |
| Court filing (COJ) | $40 – $75 |

What Is (and Isn’t) Included
A professional process serving fee should always include:
- All service attempts (typically 3 standard)
- Timestamped notes and photo documentation of each attempt
- A sworn Affidavit of Service upon completion
- Photo documentation of the address
It should NOT include hidden charges for “file handling,” “document review,” or administrative fees that weren’t quoted upfront. Always ask for a written quote before engaging a process server.
Why Cheapest Isn’t Always Best
The cheapest quote doesn’t account for quality of documentation. A poorly documented serve — missing timestamps, no photo evidence, vague descriptions in the affidavit — can be challenged in court. If the opposing party contests service, and your affidavit doesn’t hold up, you may need to re-serve and re-pay, plus face delays in your proceedings.
Professional process servers carry professional liability and understand the legal standard their documentation must meet. That’s worth paying for.
